Porosity influences cleanability; design, condition and validated instructions determine what cleaning is realistic.
Porosity affects cleaning and sharing decisions, but it is not a complete safety ranking. Non-porous does not mean sterile, antimicrobial, allergen-free, chemically inert or safe for every body area. A material name may cover different formulations, while scratches, joints, charging ports and worn coatings can create retention sites even on an otherwise non-porous product.
Resistant to absorption through an intact surface, while still requiring cleaning and condition checks.
Free from visible soil after an appropriate process; this is not the same as disinfected or sterile.
Microbial-reduction endpoints requiring validated processes that many consumer products cannot tolerate.
Material and construction
Silicone, elastomer, plastic, metal, glass and coatings are families rather than proof of a particular formulation. Ask for accurate material identity and avoid assuming softness or price reveals porosity.
Inspect seams, texture, joints, chips, cracks, tackiness and exposed cores. Replace items that cannot be cleaned as intended or whose surface integrity has changed.
Cleaning limits
Follow the manufacturer's product-specific method, including water resistance, temperature, contact time, rinsing and drying. A process safe for solid metal may damage electronics, adhesives or a composite product.
Cleaning removes soil; disinfection and sterilisation are distinct. Do not improvise harsh chemicals or boiling without verified compatibility, because residue or damage can create new risk.
Sharing and cross-contamination
Shared products can transfer bodily fluids and microorganisms. Using a new compatible condom for each person or body site and cleaning between uses can reduce risk, but barriers can tear or leave uncovered areas.
Porous products are harder to decontaminate reliably and may be best kept individual. During or after an infection, follow sexual-health and manufacturer advice rather than assuming ordinary washing is sufficient.
Storage and replacement
Dry completely and store items separately where materials, dust, lint or dyes could interact. A clean-looking surface can still retain moisture in seams or battery compartments.
Set replacement decisions by change in condition, cleaning feasibility and manufacturer guidance rather than a universal lifespan. Record material and care instructions when packaging would otherwise be lost.

- Not boiling an electronic product merely because its outer material is silicone.
